Why is HP CM1312nfi not configured automatically?

I have a HP Color laserjet CM1312nfi. In Intrepid, when I plugged it in, it was configured automatically, but in Jaunty, it is not configured automatically. I had to use 'sudo hp-setup' to configure it.

My other printer HP PSC 2170 is configured automatically in both Intrepid and Jaunty.

Seems to imply cups is not installed or running

if you install cups-pdf:

sudo apt-get install cups-pdf

It should install cups with it, you can then retry the script.

I have doen that, but of course it does not change anything, since xsane is also installed already. 'dpkg -l xsane | cat' shows

That is expected, because it has not yet been configured. However worse is, even after I have configured the printer using hp-setup, it still gives this report, even though 'lpstat -a' shows the printer is configured (and I can confirm it is working):
