How to save open office documents in docx format

Asked by Sarita

I have recently installed ubuntu and imported My Documents from Vista. All the word docs are in docx format, and I would like to work on them from Ubuntu and continue saving them in docx format, so as not to have to make a copy of all my word docs and later will not be able to work on them from Vista if need be.

Please help.

Supposedly the latest version of OpenOffice can open them but can't write
them:

As an alternative, you could save them in one of the older Word formats.
You need to be careful about a couple of things when you pass documents back
and forth between OpenOffice and MS Office. The one that I keep bumping
into, with older version of both, is change tracking. The two programs
handle it differently. In the environment I work in, we have it on all the
time because we are constantly updating documentation from a previous
release to add a few new features.
