Distorted and garbled speech when using Zoom or Duolingo

Asked by John Wilson

Distorted and garbled speech when using Zoom Client, Duolingo, Jacquie Lawson cards.
It seems that audio that is delivered within a browser is affected.
The effect is more pronounced with Firefox.
Switched to Chromium and initially the Zoom audio was unaffected but after a minute or two it became distorted.
In some Ask Ubuntu column a bug in the speech-despatcher was mentioned and to remove the package.
That didn't work.
The other solutions involved Alsa mixer and Pulseaudio but I am not sure that Ubuntu 22.1 uses either.
Any suggestions?
