SSD Device not mounting on my 22.04.1 64bit laptop

Asked by Ricardo Diamondo

I have just bought a very small but high volume SSD device (17 TB).
It make a beep noise when I plug it into a USB socket, but nothing is showing on my file system, so I cannot store any info on it.
Help please!

Before you plug the device in, run:

lsusb; sudo gdisk -l

Plug the device in, wait a few seconds then run:

dmesg | tail; lsusb; sudo gdisk -l

What is the output please?

Have you use the storage in another system? If so, did you use the safe remove feature in the OS before physically unplugging it?

Sorry for the double post, also replace gdisk with fdisk in the above commands.

Thanks for your response,
I have not used the storage in another system, yet.
After imputing your suggestion I got:

OK, we can see the storage has 4 partitions

Seems to be an audio device from this
https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-819835.html

Seems you can install pmount then mount in terminal easily

I have no experience with SSDs of such size, but I am astonished to see the fdisk output:

Disk /dev/sdb: 15.26 TiB, 16777216000000 bytes, 4096000000 sectors
Disk model: SSD
Units: sectors of 1 * 4096 = 4096 bytes

I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdb1 4294967295 8589934589 4294967295 16T ff BBT
/dev/sdb2 4294967295 8589934589 4294967295 16T ff BBT
/dev/sdb3 4294967295 8589934589 4294967295 16T ff BBT

As far as I know the dos disk label is incompatible with device sizes above 2TB.
And all partitions seem to occupy the identical space that starts at sector 4,294,967,295 which is beyond the end of the disk (4,096,000,000).
Are you sure that it is a genuine 16TB device?
Eventually this is the same fake as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8DNubmPfL4

Thanks for that Manfred,
My device looks identical to the one shown on your YouTube link!
It's obviously a scam and I will return it to Amazon and tell them to stop selling this fake drive in future.
Thanks again for saving me many hours of trying to mount it on my laptop.
