Help, I've Lost Snaps

Asked by Ricardo Diamondo

A few weeks ago I started getting pop-up messages saying that I had 10 days to stop all instances of Snaps. As the deadline was getting nearer I panicked and the only way I could find to stop Snaps was to uninstall it from the Software Centre. But now I find that the icons for Videos etc are not being shown and I'm worried that other items may not be fully working properly.
The software section does have various snaps apps but now I'm not sure which to re-install as there are so many.
Should I just install them all? Or is there a work-around through my terminal?
Not urgent but annoying.

It seems that you completely misunderstood the message from the snap updater.

I assume that is was the warning telling something like "snap packages are due to be updated, but they cannot be updated while they are running. please close them. After a grace period of ten days the update will be forced"

Which snaps did you uninstall?
You should re-install only those that you had before, not all thousands of available ones.

For diagnostic purposes please provide the output that you receive for the following commands (to be executed in a terminal window):

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
snap list
snap changes
snap refresh

Thanks for getting back. The message made no mention of the 10 days and I panicked.
After doing as you say, I got:

All snaps up to date.

Which sounds like all is OK, but I've stopped getting icon/images on mp4 files (for example)
I did download snap-store a few days ago and snaplint today, but still no icon images....

I agree, the snap environment is correctly installed.

I am not completely sure about the reason that you don't get an icon on mp4 files, but I assume installing a media player may help. I suggest that you install VLC:

sudo snap install vlc
