Hey dude,

You need to install a package called as Ubuntu Tweak. Then go to Applications -> System Tools ->Ubuntu Tweak. When Ubuntu Tweak opens,Choose Personal on the left side and in it choose Scripts. Now just drag and drop the Convert to JPG Script from Disabled to Enabled side and close. Now right click on the picture you want and go to scripts and click on Convert to JPG.Wait for few seconds and then you will find the image in jpg format placed in the same folder.

Gimp seems more than good enough for this. Just right-click on the image to "Open with other application" choose "Gimp" and then do "Save As...", simply type in the prefered file-format at the end of the filename eg, ".gif" or ".jpg" etc

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I am trying to take screenshots of unusual pictures from the internet for a project that I'm working on. My question is two part. How do I convert the screenshot from .png to .jpg and how do I crop the picture to include only the parts I want to keep?

I am new to Ubuntu. I know how to do it in Windows, but not in Ububtu. Would appreciate help...thanks

In Gimp use the "Toolbox" panel to choose the rectangular select tool (or whatever, magic lassoo or whatever, sorry i'm not great at image manipulation stuff like photoshop, gimp, fotoxx or whatever). Then use go to the picture's panel and use the "Image" menu for crop selections about halfway down.

Use "Save As..." for more control over names, where to save and for changing extension type at the end of the name. Just opening a png and then using "Save As..." (from the "File" menu) and then sticking ".jpg" at the end of the name is enough to give gimp the hint and convert it from png to jpg formats. Try it and be amazed how easy it is, nay fuss nay bother ;)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

It's also occured to me that while just pressing the key labelled "Print Screen" on your keyboard is one good way to quickly get a screenshot it's also worth using the Alt key while you press "Print Screen" to limit the screenshot to the currently active window/console. There is a fancy tool for screenshots in the desktops taskbar menu at the top of the screen

Applications - Accessories - Take Screenshot

which gives some more advanced options. I've just being using something other than Ubutnu where they don't enable the keyboard key at all but just rely on the slightly more advanced features of this menu item.

Hope this helps!
Good luck and regards again from
