have a problem in starting ubuntu 8.04

whenever i start ubuntu,sometimes the screen could not able to open.,only starting sound come from it.Secondly, when i restart the system,sometimes the destop appears but the desktop menu dissapear.I dont know whats the problem is?

I sometimes have a similar problem. The display is flickering awfully immediately after boot. Instead of rebooting every time I have found the following work-around.

1. Press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go to the console (text only)

2. Press Ctrl-Alt-F7 to go back to X Windows (graphical desktop)

Maybe the same trick does it for you?
