Printer Stopped Printing

Asked by Lonnie Widler

I recently updated Ubuntu to 20.04 from 18.04...this is when my HP Office Jet 4652 usb printer stopped printing. To be more specific, when I attempt to print something from, for example, Libre Office Writer, it recognizes the printer accurately but when I try to print, the printer does nothing. It will, however, scan.

I found some comprehensive diagnostics for debugging printing problems on a ubuntu wiki page (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems) but because I don’t belive this to be a printer bug I chose to not submit a bug report there. I did run the recommended diagnostics though and I made a copy of the results which I will be happy to send to you if you wish, although it is rather lengthy. One thing It did reveal is some missing files.

If you remove the printer from Ubuntu, disconnect the USB cable from the system and reboot. Once rebooted, log in and let the OS settle then reconnect the USB cable to then redetect the printer. Does this work OK?

By "remove the printer from Ubuntu" do you mean just disconnect the USB
cable?

It is still not clear to me what you want me to click on, but I clicked on the name of the printer in the print page of Libre Office Writer which is "Office Jet_4650_series" and another name showed up which is "Office Jet_4650_series_TH74649ON20662_". So I tried printing a page with the new name and it printed. I tried it again to be sure and it worked again. What do you think? Is that what you expected? If so I'll close this off as
