how do I make a desktop shortcut to issue a terminal command?

I have a text file containing a single terminal command line that starts an application. Currently, I start the application by opening the file, copying the command line, opening a terminal, pasting the command line, enter. How can I create a desktop icon that will start the application normally?

Which desktop are you using? GNOME?
