Unable to download ubuntu 18.04 to new DVD

Asked by peter ratcliffe

I am trying to install ubuntu 18.04 LTS from scratch. My computer has a mind of its own after being installed with both a ssp and hdd discs in order to speed it up. I'm not sure that this installation was 100% as it should be.
Up to then the machine was working OK on ubuntu 16.04; the spec is well above the minimum required to run Ubuntu in both hardware and software. Not expecting a problem I went to the internet and clicked on download. I forget which site I used because I tried others when it didn't work and I found myself going round in circles. One thing I have been unable to check is can it download a file name which already exists.
I'm sorry to ask a silly question but I'm stuck.

Thanks for your response but you are well out of my comfort zone. I
have never come across torrents so can you tell me where to go from
here. When I opened your link I got some screens which meant nothing
to me; not wishing to do any damage I opted out hoping you can point
the way for me.

Just download it from the official website.

https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/thank-you?country=US&version=18.04.1&architecture=amd64

Then burn the ISO file to the dvd using Brasero or any other software.

My problem is that I can't get a disc containing ubuntu 18.04 ISO.
All attempts to download Ubuntu have failed. How can I get to it?

What do you mean "failed"? What happens? What do you see?

I put a blank DVD in the empty drive, entered firefox search and clicked on Download Ubuntu Desktop, and clicked on the green Download stripe. As far as I can see nothing has happened. At other downloads there has been an indicator in the top left while it is happening but not this time. I see nothing unusual, "Desktop" is highlighted at the top of the screen. I am left puzzled as what next to try. Your advice will be much appreciated.

The file will be in your downloads folder. Pulling data from the Web doesn't burn it to the CD

Thank you Andrew, sorry to be so thick. There is a file in downloads called ubuntu-18.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso. Is this what is needed, and if so how do I get it to burn, in very simple terms please.

What operating system are you using to download the file?

There are two possibilities for preparing an Ubuntu installer.

1. You can burn a DVD with the installer and
2. You can use a USB stick as the device with the installer program.

The programs that you need for creating one of these installers differ between operating systems. If you use a Windows computer to prepare the installer, you have to use a different program from the one which you use when you prepare the installer on a Linux (e.g. Ubuntu) system.

All the details are described below the heading "Easy ways to switch to Ubuntu" on
https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

If you already have an older Ubuntu system and want to prepare a DVD, then you have to use the instructions
https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-burn-a-dvd-on-ubuntu
(Note: Even though the text states lists Ubuntu 18.04 as a requirement, this is not true. It might only be that some of the screens look different when you use an older Ubuntu system for this task.)

Manfred, sorry to be a pain but I am still struggling to burn a dvd with ubuntu 18.04, going round in circles.

I have downloaded ubuntu-18.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso which is sitting in downloads folder. I've tried to follow your reply yesterday but with no luck. Brasero simply does not appear anywhere, nor could I find ubuntu software installer. Either I have missed something or the computer is misbehaving. Your suggestions will be much appreciated.

What happens if you press the windows key (left of the space bar between Ctrl and Alt keys), and into the search field that opens type the word brasero

When I press the windows button, with this page open, and type brasero I get the same screen as when I press Activities except that brasero is already there. With some trepidation, and a bit of trial and error I followed the pathway shown on screen. As far as I can see I now have a bootable disc, at leased the dvd drive said success before ejecting the burnt disc. Many, many thanks Manfred.

Most of my problems stem from the huge differences between ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04. The result is that i get surprised at what happens, but we keep trying.
