Upgrade from 32bit to 64bit

Currently I am using 32 bit Ubuntu but would like to upgrade it to 64 bit version with release of 9.04.
Please tell is it possible and will that create an problem as such.

I don' think it is possible to upgrade a distribution from one architecture to another, which 32- to 64- bit upgrade rrepresents.

It would be advisable to rebuild from scratch if you want to go 64 bit

However, you should backup your home directory, and even /etc should be compatible, so you could retain any customized settings.
