Version.h does not exist. Trying to install Nvidia drivers

I'm on intrepid. Have been trying to figure this out for a couple days. this problem began when I installed Virtualbox 2.1 and got a failed to compile. so i removed it. I then tried to activate version 1.77 of the Nvidia drivers. When it booted i got failed to load glx driver. i then discovered the nvidia xserver was not running. so i downloaded the latest drivers 180 from the nvidia site and tried to install. and it came back with:

No compiled kernel interface was found.
kernel header file /lib/modules/2.26.27-11-generic/build/include/linux/version.h does not exist.
/lib/modules/2.2.27-11-generic/build not configured.

Please help. Ive tried everything i could find online. including installing build-essentials, source package, header package. Nothing works...

tom, i tried the nvidia 3d driver link you recommended. ran the latest 180 invidia driver from the prompt and got error you appear to be running x server.

when booting up is says it cannot load the nvidia driver. and from the desktop it shows nvidia x server not running at all.

still stuck...

this all began when i tried to install virtualbox 2.1 from sun's website. the virtualbox in the repositories worked fine. i really regret installing that now. I didnt realize it would break my machine. and quite possibly cause me to reformat this drive and start over if i cant find a solution.

First try rebooting the machine into the grub option for Ubuntu that has "Recovery Mode" at the end of the line. There's a "Fix broken packages" and "Fix x-server" option in there.

Please give people time to answer. I have no experience with nVidia and have only just noticed the ancient date on the first link i gave! If you do have to re-install then please backup and then try the "Manual Partitioning" option. Make sure every partition is UNticked in the "Format Partition?" column and also set the "Mount Point" of the Ubuntu partition to "/". Hopefully this should prevent any data or settings from being lost but don't count on it.

There are bound to be a lot of people in tomorrow so please give folks a chance to give a better answer because it really sounds like something there should be an easy fix for. I'm clutching at straws with this link too

Thanks Tom. Tried rebooting scenario. selected both options. rebooted again. will not load glx driver. any version. tried 173 and 177 and 180 versions. it just will not load on boot. i welcome any and all feedback :)

sort of an answer. i checked pre release updates in software sources. and noticed there was a kernel update. 2.26.27-14. i installed it. when it was done everything was working fine. drivers and all. so something had happened to that version of the kernel, i.e. 2.26.27-11. but this solution worked quickly and i did not have to back up and reinstall everything. which would have taken hours instead of minutes.

Brilliant, glad you found a better answer on your own! Sorry that no-one else did show up. It's a bit hit-and-miss in here sometimes - sometimes lots good answers but sometimes only something like mine :(
