If you successfully get a CD image and burn it, you should be able to boot from it, at which point the first thing you'll see is a menu with options like "Start or Install Ubuntu". Picking this option is safe if you want to try out Ubuntu without changing your computer. The system will boot up from the CD, and look similar to what it would look like if it were installed on your machine, only things will be slower to load, since they are being read from the CD. Once it loads up, there will be a shortcut on the Ubuntu desktop to install it on your computer so that you can use it without the CD. If you want to install Ubuntu without getting rid of windows, then make sure you don't mistakenly tell the installer to use your entire hard drive to install Ubuntu. If you don't care about Windows, then it's safe to do whatever you want.

I've hit a similar problem, I've sucessfully burned the ISO image, and follow your instructions above. I get through to the brown screen, with the CD and Hard Drive working overtime, at wich point things really slow down. Eventually, it plays a sound (that I assume is the logon sound) and the Ubuntu Logo bar appears in the centre of the screen. After thar, the screen goes black (doesn't display anything) I and the CD drive spins up and down for the next hour, before I get bored and turn it off! any ideas?

Can you help with this problem?
