/boot partition size on 60GB

Asked by Sethra

After helpful email support from a Gateway tech, I found that XP pro with spk2 will boot and install with no problems. (And it did) My goal now is to dual-boot with Ubuntu. Partition 1 is XP 60 GB, partition 2 is Ubuntu 60 GB, left over 80 GB to be ntfs for shared files.

I want to wait until the new Ubuntu next month, but the grandson is anxious.

The compromise is to install 8.10 with a partition for /home for ease of installing the upgrade. And it makes the next install future easier.

Out of the 60 GB for Linux, what size would the /home and /root need to be? With 4 GB memory, does there need to be a swap space?

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

PS Ubuntu 8.10 worked from the live CD, so I think it's going to be shiny.

You would be better off to install a second hard drive exclusively for Ubuntu.

The advantage is that if one of your hard drives fails (and they do so without warning) you still have the other drive with a fully functioning operating system and, hopefully, you will have that backed up. Remember: Don't put all your eggs into one basket.

Yes, give it swap. 1.5 - 2 GB is ample.

Yes, it would be cool if I could have a 2nd drive, but it's a laptop. I want to have an external drive eventually, but that's more than I can afford right now.

The swap advice is accepted, but how big is the minimum size for a comfortable /root partition?

I think make 1GB for swap, 10GB for home, and 49GB for root are great ...

But it's up to you, You have 4GB ram, it's not too important to make a swap partition ...
Home partition, just use to put your document, or your file, but you already have 80GB for put and share your document or file ....

and root partition is use to save your installed program, and anything about the systerm ...

It's all up to you ...

Thank you

1 + 10 + 49, as Abi ^-^ stated, sounds fine - with one caveat. When you are dividing the disc space that you think you have available you will find that it comes short.

I have Ubuntu on an 80 GB drive which is, in fact, 74.5 GB - a different set of mathematics is at play here.
My root partition uses about 4.8 GB (set to 11 GB), Swap is 1.86 GB and Home is 61.5 GB with 12 GB in use.

I think Abi ^-^ meant 10 GB for root and 49 GB for Home.

Hello Andre Mangan, I mean 49GB for root, it's because, i think he don't need to give big amount for home partition, it's because he have 80 GB partition for his file ....

But it's depend for what he need ...

For example, if you want to make a web server, you must have to put it into your root partition, in /var/www so you must have more space for root partition ...

And also, if you install application such as game, etc. You must have more space for root partition ...

Thank you
