Sony CD Burner is not detected after being used for installation.

Asked by Xarran

Strangest thing.. I installed Ubuntu 7.04 from my Sony CD rewriter, but now when I try to access the device, I get the message:

mount: special device /dev/scd1 does not exist

My dvd rom is detected just fine, but while I get CD-ROM2 appear in my file browser, the above message appears.
Any assistance regarding this would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks :)

Hey again,

The problem seems to have fixed itself, or is intermittent, as now both my DVD ROM and CD-RW have initialised after cold booting the system.
Only two options I can think of are that I either have a glitch in my hardware, or indeed one of the updates did indeed fix this issue, but required a full reboot of the system in order to let the boot up sequence correctly probe and initialise the hardware.
I'm not sure if following this is of assistance to anyone, or whether anyone is curious as to whether a reboot is indeed required to fix some particular update issues, so on the off chance it may be of useful to another user, I won't close this topic until I get some feedback from the team to say yes, I did need to cold boot, or yes its very likely a hardware issue, as such info just might help someone else in the Ubuntu community.
I defer to one of the moderators whom can close this problem as being resolved.

Many thanks again for your time folks, especially Markus :)

As I said, a few bugs were fixed recently. For example: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/75753

You indeed needed a reboot after updating your system, so it's quite likely this solved your problem. You may close this question now, as there are a few more questions open, which seem quite equal to yours.

OK, NOT quite the same problem. My problem is when I turn on the DVD-Burner (Sony DRX - 710UL) it is NOT seen at all by the system (running kubuntu 7.04) I am told there is no device whatsoever attached. This is a USB 2 DVD Burner. The hardware side is there Both my USB ports are USB II and worked under Win2000 Pro. (Which was already installed on this PC) I contacted Sony USA and they told me flat out they will not support or even make a Linux driver for this device.
