Keyboard Layouts and Symbols

Asked by gamesbratt

I had to re-do my system tonight and I am trying to re-do my keyboard Preferences. I already have my keyboard model set up I use a Microsoft Wireless keyboard and I have the lay out already done but for some reason I am still un-able to figure out how to set it up so (and I know this is going to sound funny but this is the simplest way for me to explain what I am trying to do) that when I hit Shift and a number up top (example: Shift and 2 normally gives you the at sign) the symbol will show up. I have gone through the Keyboard Preferences and under the tab Layouts closer to the bottom is the button that says Other Options I have gone through all of that and I have know idea which one I am supposed to turn on so to speak. Can Someone please Help me.

I am using Ubuntu 8.1 and the Canada Layout and yes the only problem I am having is with Symbols.

Could you specify the name of your current layout and the Ubuntu release that you are running? Is the problem with the symbols the only problem right now?

Perhaps resetting to defaults would do the trick.

The main difference between the english and the american keyboards is the currency symbol on the "3" key. The english has it as a £ but the americans have a $ i think.

I think you might be looking for

System - Preferences - Keyboard

and then the "Layouts" tab and the "+" button?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
