add/remove applications problem

It all depends on how "slow" "really slow" is :-)

Maybe we should check if there's a problem with apt-get. Apt-get is the "underlying" programm for the add/remove application.

Please open a terminal window and run "sudo apt-get install hplip". Are there any error messages? Please report them here.

First thing, I mean slow as in the wait icon will go on until I log off, Shut down or kill the app. Second thing I am trying to get the HP LIP Tool kit, so i can see the status, and change settings. The HPLIP drivers are already installed.

The package hplip includes:

So it might be a good idea to test apt-get as mentioned.

You might also give Synaptic (System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager) a try. It's also based on apt-get, but you might be more comfortable with a graphical user interface.

Aside from HPLIP, When i want to install or remove a app using Add/Remove Applications it hangs. I am new at this and i want to just install apps from this tool.

See, ryan: If apt-get does not work, you won't be able to install any kind of software with Add/Remove Applications.

For that, we still should check if apt-get gives any error messages, as mentioned.

Additional to that, please run "/usr/bin/gnome-app-install" (it's Add/Remove Applications) from terminal, try to install something and provide us any error messages during the installation.

You might (for sure) kill the application. Please provide the terminal error messages (if any) from "/usr/bin/gnome-app-install" and "sudo apt-get install hplip". Thanks!

Well how do I kill it, I only started using Ubuntu on Wed!

Easyiest way would be a restart. But you can also open a terminal and type "killall gnome-app-install".

Restart: If you press "Ctrl-Alt-Backspace" (*not* Ctrl-Alt-Del) only X-Window will restart and provide you a login window.

I managed to kill it and ran the commands in terminal, you can see then below:

When i ran /usr/bin/gnome-app-install, add/remove applications came back up.

Now, please try to install something and watch the output growing (please add the information here). You can always kill gnome-app-install by pressing Ctrl-C in the terminal window.

Do i install something through the terminal or the add/remove

Try this in Terminal:
sudo killall gnome-app-install
sudo killall apt-get
then open synaptic and reinstall gnome-app-install it if that doesn't work. remove it completely and then install it again.
