Working google earth packages are part of medibuntu http://www.medibuntu.org/
Just follow the repository how-to, then install google-earth from synaptic.
(System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager)

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/intrepid.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install medibuntu-keyring && sudo aptitude update

This will add the Medibuntu repository, import the Medibuntu GPG key and make the new packages available.

Install Google Earth

sudo aptitude install googleearth-4.3

Bert

It shuts down the system. It shuts the system also down, if you downloaded it from www.googleearth.com.

Please try to disable desktop-effects menu System → Preferences → Appearance [Visual effects] set them to "None"

Then retry

Hope this helps
