Does Ubuntu makes use of accelerometer to protect my disk ?

Asked by Wladston Viana

On the operating system that came with my laptop, the system warned me every time I make a abrupt moment, saying that it had temporarily locked the hard drives head to avoid damage. (that warning off course came with a checkbox that would allow me to disable that from coming up every time)

I have installed Ubuntu on my laptop, and it didn't mention such protection. I'm a bit afraid of using Ubuntu while I'm on the go, because I don't know if it protects the disk or not.

Does it protect the disk ? (if yes, I hope I can fill a bug for that not telling it's active ?)

Or it doesnt ? (In this case, I hope I can fill a bug asking for support)

I know that such support shouldn't be easy to make, maybe because the manufacturers keeps the data sheets closed and don't release drivers for linux.

Thanks!

Ok, Isearched in net (sorry for my delay). We can ses if your accelerometer
is enabled using this command line:

$ cat /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position

Post the result. Thanks many

Massimo,

I typed it on the notebook and got back :

cat : /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position ; No such file or directory.

I have never used an older version of ubuntu on this laptop, so I don't really know if that bug suits me.

I guess I should report a new one ?

Check the latest comments on the bug report linked to this question, you will see a patch for the kernel has already been released, now we only need to have a daemon implemented that locks the drive.
