why i can't connect to a wireless wifi that has a WEP key using ubuntu?

I Have the key, but when i use ubuntu, it just wont connect. when i use XP, i tconnects with no problem.

Sometimes the WEP key you are using is in hexadecimal form, but you usually do not have to set under XP.
You could try to write your WEP key as a WEP hexadecimal, and if it does not work, write it again but as a WEP ascii (or also spelled ansi).
Potentially you need to specify if it is 64 or 128 bit...

Which version of ubuntu are you on?
Did you try out all the possible options (shared key, private key etc.)?
To add what Huygens said: Ascii key uses any ascii character (i.e. binary 0-255 per "digit") and hex key uses 0,..,9 and a,...,f (i.e. binary 0-15, per "digit", hence hexadecimal).
I'm on 8.10, using KDE and I never had any troubles.

its also possible that you need to update your wifi adaptor drivers. i had a similar issue with a broadcom wifi adaptor where it would connect to WEP but not to WPA. you can see what adaptor you have as well as well what driver your using with the terminal command:

lshw -C network
