starting new x-session (kdm) hangs Thinkpad

Need to hard reset with power button for 4 secs...

Really weird, for me switching between users works quite good without problem, I do not really think that it is connected to your computer brand/type. In my opinion write a bug
Probably you have a bug in your system, maybe you have not installed correctly or it is just a smaller problem, so just write a bug report. They will help you for sure.
