GNOME newbie from KDE: any hint list?

Asked by Uqbar

I've decided to go the GNOME way.
As I've never worked with it for more than few minutes. I'd need some hints to get the transition smoother. Maybe a "KDE to GNOME switch HOW TO".
I mean hints like (but not only):
1. How to customise window decorations, GUI styles and icons
2. How to have applications (like GNOME terminal) to remember the window size at the opening
3. How to keep the notification area and the other widgets on the panel in the same order

Hi Uqbar,
Some features have no equivalent at GNOME. because it is not it's philosophy.
The answers:
1.- To customize windows decorations yo must go to System->Preferences->Look and Feel
2.- To get the maximum control of gnome you can open a terminal and execute the command: gconf-editor,
3.- To keep the notification area ordered you can make a right click on the icon and check lock to the panel.
Hope this helps, let me know.

Thanks Ariel for the hints.
What I'm looking for (provided that it exists) is a broader coverage.
By the way, the System->Preferences->Appearance covers a very limiter part of the settings I'm looking for.
Is there any documentation for the gconf-editor (I mean, the meaning of the settings)?

Hi again,
As I said before, KDE is by far more customizable than GNOME.
If you can be more precise about which kind of decorations do you want to modify, I can be more specific in my answer.
To read the GNOME Desktop System Administration Guide you must go to:
http://library.gnome.org/admin/system-admin-guide/stable/
You can try:
www.gnome-look.org
www.art4linux.org
for some art for customize your desltop.
You can read this article to see what are we talking about:
http://www.linux.com/feature/37180
Hope this helps, let me know.

1. I'd like to have the "Always on top" button shown on every window.
2. I'd like to have the Terminal application opened as maximised every time.
3. I'd like to change the colors of some elements in the style I'm using.

Moreover I'm not sure whether "Minimize to sys tray" is related to the GUI or the application.
In the former case I'd like to be able to minimize windows to sys tray, just like Transmission.

I do understand that GNOME is a different world from KDE. Nonetheless I expect to be able to do more than before.

1))All windows have "Always on top", single left click on the upper-left corner and select "Always on top".

2))I use :
gnome-terminal --full-screen
theres an option on the GUI too.

3))Install this .deb, and use this program :
http://prdownload.berlios.de/gnomeartng/gnomeartng-0.6.0-all.deb

good luck friend.

1. It's not the same as having a button on the title bar. But it obviously work.
2. I changed my panel button to add "--maximize". I want the terminal started as maximized
3. I'll give that a try.
