Netboot image 20070308ubuntu40 failed to install
My computer specs:
Compaq Presario SR1550nx with 3400+ AMD Athlon 64 processor, 1 Gig ram, 200 GB hard drive, Light Scribe DVD/CD R/W, Windows XP is already installed so I'm installing a dual boot system. The Windows system was checked for errors and defragmented prior to trying to install Ubuntu.
I downloaded the Ubuntu 8.04 64 bit LTS minimal install ISO image and burned the CD at 16X, much slower than the 40X offered, and this speed worked for installing the 32 bit system on my old laptop successfully. The computer boots up into to the installation program but there is a very slow retrieval of initial components, like it waits in que for a long time for each component. After guided partioning is complete, error "Failed to download base system" appeared with about 8% download completed. Second try - "Failed getting release file" error appeared, couldn't download Aptitude and a lot of other packages. Several tries were made and all failed. I chose "Abort Installation" and retried after several base system installation attempts.
I also tried the 64 bit standard installation CD I burned, but after it booted up, the process seemed to hang about halfway through.
What do I do?
