can't burn cd's

since installing ubuntu 8.04 I can't get my cd-wr drive to burn. I reads fine but won't burn at all. I've tried using Brasero, K3b, and Gnomebaker. K3b and Brasero just hang, and Gnomebaker goes through the motions then unmounts and disables my cd-wr drive. I have tried adding a second cd-wr drive and the same happens. Both drives work normally under Windows xp and vista.

Does it work in the livecd? If you only have one cd drive, install the livecd in a usb key.

I'm about to upgrade to 8.10. If it still doesn't work I'll try burning with livecd loaded. Fingers crossed X-) ..........

no difference with upgrade... still hangs... this pc won't boot from usb key... dunno what to try next!! If i boot into windoze the cd-rw function normally. Wondering wether to try new flavor of 'nux :-(

Coming from a different distro myself, Gentoo, having switched two weeks ago after 3 years, I can assure you it won't make that much of a difference. Either you get a distro that does things for you (Ubuntu, Fedora, Suse, etc) or you have to work a lot (Gentoo,LFS,...). And Ubuntu is the best doing things automatically. I imagine you could get it to work in Gentoo, but that manual work can be done here too.

You mean the motherboard doesn't allow boot from a usb key or you tried and didn't worked? Please gives us more information on your hardware. What was the last working Ubuntu version?

Can you try from a console?
Get an iso image and try burning it like that:

wodim -scanbus

you'll get the path to your device

put it here:
wodim dev=/dev/yourdevice /path/to/the/iso_image

please tell me if it works.

o joy :-( motherboard doesn't support booting from usb. Can't burn from console either. Tried doing a clean install of 8.10 but made no difference.. Next step is changing to LinuxMint6.. from past experience with mint, I found that everything worked fine. Though mint6 is basically 'buntu 8.10 under the hood, I'll give it a try before resorting to Suse, or Gentoo. will keep you posted. Thanx for the advice.

I think burner worked in Ubuntu 6.06,, but i remember it definately worked with Mint Bea.

Sorted it. :-) installed WINE and then installed DeepBurner. Burns fine using this Windoze prog. A shame I cant get native Linux apps to burn but never mind. At least I don't need to keep dual-booting.

That's odd. Remember it's Linux who is communicating with your cd drive, using kernel drivers and communicating with Wine which then creates a virtual drive to your application. So the problem may be the applications you tried (probably they use some common library which won't work for you).
