Thank you, Thank you eolo999. It works like a dream now. This is why I love Ubuntu people so willing to help.

I also have a Logitech USB desktop microphone (the same one in this post), and after following the directions above (changing devices, raising volumes, unmuting, etc.) I still can't get anything to record in the Sound Recorder Application.
