A concern about upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid

I'm considering upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid, however, I wanted to make sure this won't be a problem: I have replaced the default OpenOffice.org 2.4 with 3.0. Will this be affected if I upgrade? I understand a lot of things can go wrong, so perhaps I should ask: Is my OpenOffice.org installation bound to get affected under ordinary circumstances when the upgrade gets done without a hitch?

Hi,

You can easily check this before doing the upgrade.

Personally I would not use update-manager or aptitude dist-upgrade to do any upgrade of Ubuntu.

Nowadays, I always boot from the LiveCD and test Ubuntu that way. When satisfied, I install to the harddisk using the LiveCD. Others might have other preferences of course. If you upgrade to Intrepid by installing from the LiveCD, then yes, I am almost certain that the installer will downgrade your Openoffice from 3.0 to 2.4

But if you use the following commands (after replacing hardy with intrepid in the /etc/apt/sources.list file)

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

you can easily see if aptitude is planning to downgrade Openoffice, BEFORE you decide to upgrade or not. If aptitude dist-upgrade wants to downgrade Openoffice, you probably want to abort the upgrade.

I upgraded to Jaunty recently, and it works perfect on my laptop.
