Live CD

Asked by costa

Hello,
I've burned Live CD Ubuntu 8.10 (386x) and now is planning just to try it, without any installation. Can someone let me know, what option(s) should I choose for just trying Ubuntu...
I'm worrying,, that if I click Install or smth. like that - it deletes my WVista...
Sorry for silly question (I assure, I read guidances).

Thanks in advance

K.

Yep, just avoid the install to disk option & you'll be fine :)

No problem for the question at all ;)

It will be very clear when you are installing ubuntu so don't worry. But to assure you I'll tell you which things you should click on:

first you insert the life cd and restart your computer.
you will then see the live-ce startup screen and you will click the top possibiltity which is: "use ubuntu without any change to my computer"(this is not the the exact text). Then ubuntu will start (this may take a while because it must boot from the cd.)

After that you will be in ubuntu: topleft is the "start" place for programs, places and preferences etc.
Just don't click on the install ubuntu Icon on the desktop and you can't do anything wrong.

when you you restart your computer and remove the cd, you wouldn't notice a thing. vista will be working just like before.

Good luck!

Thanks, very swift,
just to be sure :), option "start or install Ubuntu" on initial screen will not lead to actual installation (RAM only will be used).

Installation will be triggered only if I double click Install on the desktop of Ubuntu, am I right?

Thanks again!

Look under either 'Add/Remove Programs' in the main menu 'Applications' on the top taskbar or try looking in Synaptic Package Manager System menu - Administration - Synaptic is near the end. The 'Applications' menu is directly above where the Start button menu would be on Windows. Alos is worth checking the Examples folder, maybe Anyway, gota go. Good luck and have fun :)

Tom,
I've tried it!
Working perfectly! I was really impressed, very much easy-going, straight forward OS.

I even was able to connect to secured internet immediately, without any adjustments...settings changes...

I tried some features...it can bring about lots of stuff...for free...

That's just great!

My plan is to install it as dual OS with WVista for the time being, arrange migration of all my stuff and...uninstall Vista!

Now I'll start reading, how to securely install both systems...:)

Btw, I read about Wesnoth and Glest in Wiki :)))

Good Luck!

I recommend avoiding the Wubi install. It just combines the flaws in both operating systems.

Vista doesn't like having it's partition messed around with by linux, Xp was ok but Vista can freak sometimes. The best bet is to find a Partition Editor in Vista and use that to shrink the Vista partition. Once you have freed up between 5Gb and 20Gb then close Vista down properly and work from Linux instead. Do you have a Live Cd of a tiny distro such as Wolvix? Having a tiny distro that can work as a bootable disc can help quite a lot if you have any trouble with anything later. DistroWatch is a popular place to compare different distros and here's the Wolvix page
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix
and their download page, only 3 mirrors in the middle of the page
http://wolvix.org/get.php

Puppy is similar but although lots of people do like it (so it has great forums) i still prefer Wolvix. Anyway
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=puppy
http://www.puppylinux.com/download/

Now either of these (using Gparted) or the Ubuntu install disc (go for Manual Partitioning, definitely not automatic or guided) can help you setup 2 partitions for linux. A small linux-swap of double ram-size and the main linux ext3 for the main OS and programs.

Good luck :)
