Asked by Thomas

I can't find power management in Kubuntu. Can you tell me how to access it? My monitor keeps shutting off after about 20 minutes. Thanks

Go to the KDE Menu and from there to Control Center. Then from the menu in your left hand go to Power Control if you are using a laptop. Else, try Peripherals and then Display. From there go to the Power Control tab, and fix your thing up!

I'm on a desktop and when I go to Settings/Control Center/ Peripherals there is no "Display".

Interesting..
Try using the search for stuff like "Display" or "Monitor" or "Power". Else, try checking the other menus in the Control Center for things related to the Power Management or your Monitor.
Report back, then.

Thanks.

I searched all the other menus in the Control Center and there is nothing there related to "Power", "Display", or "Monitor". When I did the file search it showed 4 display files, 723 power files, and 2 monitor files but I don't know what to do with any of them???

Guys, you are talking about "System Settings" here right? It is invoked by K Menu->System Settings.
Try launching the stock "Control Center" by typing "kcontrol" in K-Menu->Run Command (or Alt-F2) and hitting enter.
Control Center is a classic KDE configuration application. System settings is just another view into the collection of configuration applets such as "Monitor & Display". Also you can enter "display" or "monitor" into search box both in System Settings and in KDE Control Center. This will give you a list of relevant configuration applets in Control Center or highlight relevant ones in System Settings. Hope this helps. I am using Kubuntu 7.04 (feisty).

I did as you suggested and typed "kcontrol" in Run Command but that gave me pretty much the same info except for the search option. And when I type in "display" or "monitor" in the search window of KDE Control Center nothing comes up. Also I went through every menu and submenu and there is nothing on "display", "monitor", or "power". Thanks anyway

could it be in the screen saver setup, maybe it can turn your dpms monitor off after x time.

No, that's the first place I looked. There's nothing there about "Power" or "Power Management" like it is in Ubuntu. Also, the monitor shuts off whether the screensaver is on or off. Thanks anyway

The likely reason is that kde-guidance package package is not installed. This also means that kubuntu-desktop metapackage is also not installed, which is a bad thing, because kubuntu-desktop contains dependencies which are used to install and keep installed all the usefull packages for KDE.

You can install kde-guidance alone or kubuntu-desktop by launching K Menu->System->Adept Manager and finding them there. Alternatively you can simply type 'sudo apt-get install kde-guidance' or 'sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop' at the konsole.

I would recommend installing kubuntu-desktop, because it is intended to be this way.

That did the trick. Once I installed the guidance package I was able to access Monitor & Display. Thank you very much....and kudos to Dennis!
