can't login in uuntu 8.10

Asked by Samarth Kumar

danielgd answered my question 17hours ago. He answered that if you can see bars on top and down then there is nothing to worry. My problem is that when i open ubuntu8.10 only mouse cursor appears. Nothing else appears and the background is brown in colour. Pressing left and right click doesn't show any result. I have a pc with 512mb RAM and 40GB HDD IDE type. I am a new user amd eager to work on ubuntu.

- Did you check your CD if it's OK? Boot using the Ubuntu desktop cd and choose "Check CD for defects". It will take a while and say if everything is ok :) If it's not, I suggest re-downloading an ubuntu cd: http://releases.ubuntu.com/intrepid/

- Did you upgrade an older ubuntu 8.04 release? I suggest clean installs.

- Try to reinstall Ubuntu.

Hi Samarth Kumar,
I tried installing Ubuntu 8.10 in my system and I got exactly the same problem as you had... Only the mouse pointer appears and nothing else happens... The keyboard seems to have frozen too... Were you able to solve it? If so, do let me know...

I have the same problem. I thought it had something to do with my hardware but I threw in Win 7 and it is working fine. Ubuntu 8.10 cannot even start in the live CD mode. Something to do with video? Please assist.

Hi... The problem occurred when i tried to install Ubuntu 8.10 which i got from the Ubuntu community via post. But then, because it failed, i tried downloading 8.04 from the Ubuntu website itself and installed it. Its working fine now. In fact, I'm posting this message by logging into Ubuntu. Its really good. And one suggestion to people who are new to Linux. Try the live CD first. If everything that u want works in the live CD, then i think you may safely proceed with the installation. But if u get the problem as reported above (while trying the Live CD itself), then I might suggest you to try another CD. Good luck... :-)

Can you help with this problem?
