When you installed Ubuntu off either the Desktop CD or Alternate CD, it would have asked you for a username and password.
If not, re-install, and then use that username and password when prompted.

Hi Joshua....
that answer is not what I am looking for..... What I AM looking for are
specific passwords that are asked for but not stated anywhere on this
particular setup / situation! I can't understand why I had no problems with
this computer... it is only on the new one that passwords are asked for that
don't show up anywhere and nothing I type in there works.
thanx for taking your time for me tho...

Ok,
I must be failing to properly express myself. I'm an 11 year veteran of
Windows, and a newbie with Linux... in fact - I even have started to build
computers for a hobby and do all sorts of stuff with Windows OS's on them.
My problem starts with not knowing just what they want when the screen comes
up and asks for passwords, they want 2 passwords... a username, and a
password.
Can anyone please just answer this simple question, WHAT username and
password?
AND - if anyone knows them (and you must if you are using the Feisty
Fawn).... will you please state these 2 words in question to me so I can
start enjoying this Linux version too?
It's all ready to go as soon as I get just 2 little words to enter in th
box...
I have not done anything at all to this install other than install it, I
haven't changed anything!
The seeming splash screen just before the regular desktop is the screen
asking for these 2 words.
I do not know how to communicate my request any better than this and if this
fails just please consider the case closed, but you still have my gratitude
for taking the time to respond.
John
P.S. I've hoped to not sound sarcastic at all up there ^^^^, BUT - my
frustration is starting to show. Please forgive me if it did seem so...

Hmm... This installation video is a bit different than in feisty, but you get idea. So you type in the password and username you chose at installation (on this video 01:11). You type these in your login screen.

I have the same problem as John More:
I downloaded the Feisty Fawn DVD from the torrent link.
I burned the iso on DVD.
I restarted the computer.
I choose to run the Ubuntu live DVD.
Then I am asked for a username and password, which I don't have!!!
Could you please tell me the default username and password?
NOTE: I did NOT install anything yet! I can't even get to the live DVD desktop!
I can't find anything about this anywhere on the internet. Do I have a weird version or something?
Thank you.

Same problem.
I'm using ISO downloaded from Ubuntu site burned on a CD.
After choosing "Run or Install" from 1st welcome screen, PC runs for a while, then prompts for username and password - which I don't have.
I'm trying to install on a PC already running Windows XP (haven't convinced the wife yet...) so I tried to input the same password but it doesn't help. I even went ant changed password in Win then tried again - got the same result, wrong username or password. I tried every possible combination of usernam and password I could think about and which makes sense but without success.
Any clue?
Thanks.

I begin to suspect some images have not been generated correctly.
Install CD, DVD are supposed to go in a graphical environment without asking for a password.
There is no default password on Ubuntu.
I suggest you use https:/

Hope it will help to clarify things.

From what I've read, I'm experiencing a similar situation. I've loaded Feisty on a number of computers just fine, all from the same CD. However, on my Vaio notebook, I'm prompted for a username when booting the live CD. In fact, I can't even get to the desktop because I've been unable to locate a working username. As stated, this same CD works great on other hardware (writing this post now from an install from that CD). I just can't seem to figure out why my notebook prompts for a username when none of the other computers I've loaded Feisty on have asked for that.
Anyone?

Thanks for that link Paul - that indeed was the answer. I handed out the CD I had been using to a friend, so I used the same ISO I had to burn a new one. The new burn worked like a charm. Thanks again!

Wow, I had forgotten about this thread until I got an email notification about it. Black Cloud brings up an interesting, albeit "clouded" point here. The issue is consistently a corrupt image, which for 100% of new users was created on a M$ machine. They get one error and refuse to look into things - they just fall back into their pseudo safety-net with all the pretty colors and the four things that M$ can do.
Personally, I've been using some flavor of *nix in some capacity for years now and the only love I have for M$ is that I'm in the exact opposite position as the Maytag Repair Man. For my non-US friends, that simply boils down to the fact that I make a pretty decent living as a M$ Network Admin and am loving the job-security.
Flame on, haters. You guys are the ones that call me when your XP box won't print.

Dear Daley. Have I caught you at a bad moment or something? Your
response is what I would have expected from a Jewish rabbi, whilst denying
The Holocaust happened. I apologise for upsetting you so. My fault. I am not
used to dealing with unstable fanatics. At least, your tirade gives me that
impression about you. Anyway, you have a good day. I can assure you that I
will never call you to fix anything of mine, nor bother to contact you in
anyway. I fix my own networks & systems; thank you very much. Yes, they all
run M.$. software, & are surprisingly reliable. Maybe because only stable
people use them? Just a thought.

Black cloud he is not a fanatic.I am trying to run ubuntu on a partition. I put in a name username password but still when i get to the point of install where it ask for username and password it never works. Now you can say what you want about"Flame on, haters. You guys are the ones that call me when your XP box won't print."but the truth is ubuntu cant compete with any other os if the programers cant even make it install right. Its a shame this os is crap because it looked so beautiful. If anyone ever fixes this let me know because I would like to give ubuntu studio a try.P.S.If you think we are the only ones who have this problem you better google cant install ubuntu and you will see thousands of people. If this was fixed you would have double the users on this os."I use windows vista premium and want to install ubuntu 7 on a partition if anyone needed to know.

Gosh, I'm sorry to hear that you're stuck with Windows! Granted the comment
about "haters" and all that was probably un-called for, but truth be told
Windows was designed to be a *very* user-friendly OS. You really don't need
to know squat to load it or use it. Now, I'm not trying to offend anyone
here (as I've already done), but the objectives are completely different.
The problem about not being able to log in was resolved (at least for me and
several others) by ensuring you have a *good* copy of the ISO - doing an MD5
checksum will answer that question.
I personally use Ubuntu on all my computers - work, home, laptop, etc., as
does my 12 year-old son and it does everything we need it to do. Sure, I run
into quirks with it, but those quirks (in my scenario) are less painful than
when Windows crashes or whatever. Yes, I'm a Windows Admin - I make my money
off the stuff so I certainly don't want it to go away. I'll admit that the
transition from Windows to Linux was a bit of a rough road for me, but
there's a learning curve involved. Not one of us on this planet had all the
answers when we started - everyone has to go through that learning curve.
My reasons for going exclusively Linux? Reconfigurability and stability.
Then again, I'm not an average user - I'd rather put up with an
"opportunity" to overcome an obstacle than fight with an unstable
app/os/
Please give Ubuntu another shot - it really is a cool OS, and for the most
part it *should* do everything you need it to. If not, there are ways around
it.
Oh, and here's my public apology to Black Cloud. I'm sorry - that was truly
un-called for, and your points are very valid. Thank you for sharing your
views.

Thanks for the post Daley. After posting I gave it another shot and success. The only thing i did different is highlighted all the packages(video audio editing etc)this time the username and password popped up in a ubuntu window where before it was in command prompt??Anyway I am now looking at a very beautiful os.I still have some issues though.1 being the feature that adds sparkles and stuff when you close windows.its in appearance and when i activate it says"failed to execute child process"compiz"(no such file directory).another issue is I cant connect to my home network so no internet.Im sure after searching i can find resolution to the minor problems.I really think after using this for a little while The Vista beast will be deleted.P.S. Ubuntu Studio is a wet dream for videocasters like myself. Thanks again for the quick response Daley and Im off to troubleshoot my other issues.
