How to open applications instead of going to the apps menu

I access applications by going to the applications menu. Suppose if i dont have the menu, how can i open those applications . I use the Program Files folder in windows to open the applications. How do i go abt in Ubuntu either thru some folder or terminal.

use alt+f2 to open run command which can be used for run an application

i would also recommend gnome DO . it also does the same work as alt+f2 but can do muck more
than that .............. very similar to launchy for windows
for gnome DO (it might be also available in repos.. so check in synaptic first)

You can copy every launcher of the Applications menu by dragging them to the desktop.

Well thanks to both for ur answers. Can u tell me whether these shorcuts as a whole will reside in a common location like Program files in Windows.

well programs are stored in folders ------ /bin , /usr/bin and in /sbin
