I want to know whether Ubuntu 64 bit is as good as its 32 bit version.

I got 4Gb of RAM normal 32 bit distros aren't using all the RAM. Can some one to tell me whether 63 bit linux has come of age. Most of the past questions are obsolete, so I'm repeating this question "Is 64 bit Ubuntu a perfect equal of 32 bit?"

Hi,

For the "free" part, I would say "yes". For the non-free part (drivers, plugins...), definitely no. Most external applications (adobe flash player, acrobat reader, google earth etc) are not available for 64 bit linux kernels, so it might be a bit complicated to run them (you will have to install 32 bit corresponding libraries etc). I can't tell more, because my wireless card does not work with the 64 bit CD. The first thing you can do is to try to burn a 64 bit Ubuntu CD and check if everything works as expected.

I am running Ubuntu 64 bit and moved over from 32 bit a few months ago. All of my desktop computer drivers worked out of the box.

Some of the problems I have run into have been in regards to Adobe Flash, but right now I am quite happy with everything. Adobe Flash came out with version 10 and I switched my sound to point to the pulse driver. If you need some help, I'd be happy to help with your transition.

Interesting. I use linux for surfing, like audacity, little audio video conversion. Will 64 bit handle this? Also I watch a lot of restricted formats like MP3 and RMVB, are these codecs available in 64 bit.

Hi Rey,

yes the codecs are available under 64 bit width the installation of the package w64codecs or if you like w32codecs are allready work too. Yes it will be handle it.

I've been using the 64bit version of Kubuntu since 8.10, and everything works great. Only the adobe flash plugin caused some trouble, but I installed the 64bit beta version and it works even better than the 32bit plugin in a 32bit OS.

ubuntu-8.10-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent is the torrent file to download the 64bit version of ubuntu for AMD and Intel CPUs that support 64bit.

ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso.torrent is the torrent file to download the "regular" 32bit version of ubuntu.
