On your panel, you need to find the icon that represents the Network Manager. It should look like one computer behind another and when hovered over, should say 'Wired/Wirelss Network Connection',

Right click on the icon once you have found it and select 'Connection Information', then a window should appear telling you information about the connection and next to 'Speed' it should say the speed of the connection.

Hope this Helps

You can also use gkrellm (look for it in synaptic), which among other things, will show you the network transfer speed.

If you want to see the actual speed (or bandwidth)that your provider gives to you, you must try with http://www.speedtest.net
