Need Installation Support

Asked by Hemant Wadwha

i recently tried to install Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop Edition on my Dell Studio 15 laptop.
During the installation process I got the following error:

"No root File System Is Defined
Please correct it from the partitioning menu"

I have used dyne:bolic before but just as a live CD user, so do provide as much detail as possible, it will be highly appreciated. One more thing, I want to use Windows Vista as well as Ubuntu as separate OS on the same system. How can I di that.
Thanks In Advance

Hello. the first step to create 2 partitions and install vista at the beggining. When you have done that you can install if you want Ubuntu directly inside Windows as a normal software so you might try and create an idea on how to install it and how it works. than you can use the live cd to boot from the live cd and during the install you have to do this steps :

1. Select the second partition that is empty (not the vista one).

2. Create a Primary partition using that space and leave 500 MB free from all the free space you have. The format has to be ext3 Journaling File System , and the mount point has to be "/"

3. with the 500 MB that you left before create a primary partition with the Swap Format.

All you have forgot to do is the "/"

Then everything will be ok for you.

If you want you can install Ubuntu before and Vista after but you will have to reinstall Grub.

Hope this helps
