How do i remove XP from Ubuntu?

Asked by rrummelhof

I've just bought an Acer Aspire One (160GB HDD, 1 GB RAM) with Windows XP installed. Shortly after i bought it, I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on d:. I wanted to Remove Ubuntu (couldn't get Atheros Wifi to work), so I deleted the partition, the ran MBRfix.exe in windows.
However, later i tried Ubuntu through the Wubi-installer, got my Atheros Wifi to work, and, simontaneously, my XP got so infected with virus and spyware, I cant even open it ...

My question is: Is there a way to delete XP from ubuntu, and still keep my pictures (I'm a photographer, so i have backup for approx. 95% of the files - however ..I really want those 5% too)

-Oh, I also want Compiz, but haven't managed to make it work yet.. It's installed allright, but doesnt work..

Get gparted and remove/format your windows partition to use for ubuntu data
(or whatever else you want).
For the compiz...Ubuntu has a settings window for configuring compiz
effects.
Try reading here:

and this is what I'd do if i installed Ubuntu on a separate partition ...but I installed Ubuntu using the Wubi installer. That's my problem. If i delete the windows partition, i also delete Ubuntu.

PS: Thanks for the Compiz help -it worked!

I'm glad to hear compiz worked.
However, if you installed ubuntu using wubi, then it is hosted on windows,
so it is not on a separate partition. You cannot delete windows, but you
should reinstall ubuntu as the only system, or in dual boot configuration,
but on separate partitions.
Please tell me if you need further help with this.

...ok. Was kinda hoping that I didnt have to do a full installation.. I just got the Wifi to work ++
Is there a way to keep these settings? And what about the media files? Create a new partition meanwhile i install ubuntu?

Well, for the wifi, just try performing the same steps you did when
installing on wubi.
Which settings would you like to keep?
About the media files: do you have a single partition? if yes, then you have
to back up your media files.
If you already have more partitions on your disk, you can move them to the
other partition, and install the ubuntu where windows is now.
When you do the new install, make three partitions: / (main system), /home
(put your files there, so you won't have to back up the next time), and swap
partition.
