Ubuntu freezes after login screen

Asked by Solrac

Hi,

I just installed a fresh install ubuntu(5.1-i386) on my comp. Installation didnt report any errors that i noticed and it boots fine up to the login screen. But when i type in my username and password and login it freezes on the next screen.

I tried the recovery mode and starting the xwindow system from there but it holds on the start aswell. No errors on the Xorg.0.log. Any thoughts on where to look for a solution?

Also look at file ~/xsession-errors
There has been a similar support request
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+ticket/487
where it has been suggested to remove the file
.ICEauthority
from your home directory.

Please tell what hardware you've got (lspci -vv). If this is X freezing, try commenting out Load "dri" from /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Do you hear any sound?

It is possible that esd is hung, trying to grab the sound device. Try
running `killall esd` at a command prompt, and see if it gets any
further.

1. From the Grub boot menu slect the “recovery mode” option.

2. Select “root Drop to root shell prompt”

Type the following at the prompt:

3. sudo apt-get remove compiz

4. sudo apt-get remove compiz-core

5. exit

6. Select “resume Resume normal boot”

You should now be up and running! If you want to try to use compiz later install it through the Synaptic Package

Manager
