player for listening internet radio

Hello Kevin,

there are many media players in Linux which can stream internet radios.

You're probably familiar or at least heard of Winamp - XMMS is a media player "with Winamp 2.x looks" and it can play at least Shoutcast streams. It's also relatively lightweight.

If you want something with more features you should try Amarok which supports many streaming formats and also handles you local media collection nicely if you have one.

Please do not hesitate to ask if you want to hear about other alternatives as well - or then just search for them in Synaptic.

I was trying to click on the on-line internet radio button. It pops out a message indicating the missing of Window media player. It seems the radio website provide only WMA stream on their on-line radio broadcasting. I wonder if there are any program I can install in Ubuntu that when it can serve this on-line internet radio streaming function.

if I'm correct you only need WMA codecs. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/WindowsCodecs for them. At least Amarok should be able to stream the radio after that - possibly XMMS also.

One i like is bmpx

Using System → Administration → Software sources [Ubuntu software] please enable the Universe the repository.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install bmpx

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

You will find it into Applications→ Sound & Video → BMPx

Play mp3 and dvd under Ubuntu and other restricted formats

First please install https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

You need to have extra repositories enabled..

Please first enable the multiverse repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Software restrictecd by copyright or legal issue ( multiverse )"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Type the following command in a terminal (applications → accessories → terminal)

sudo aptitude install vlc

To get better dvd playback first you need to add the medibuntu http://www.medibuntu.org/ repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:
here howto add https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu here the medibuntu available software list http://packages.medibuntu.org/

Then to install:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
sudo aptitude install libdvdread3 libdvdnav4 libdvdcss2
sudo aptitude install non-free-codecs gstreamer0.10-pitfdll w32codecs ubuntu-restricted-extras

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

As a new comer, really appreciate your enthusiasm on helping this.

I read through the Ubuntu document and tried those commands to include the Medibuntu repository on terminal:

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update

and also
sudo apt-get install w64codecs

It seems those commands were executed correctly without error. Expect those codecs should have been installed. After that, I went to internet radio website sites trying to listen live-radio as did on Windows. It still did not able to stream the live-radio out. Any idea or suggestion may be on settings something I did not aware of?

Essentially, all the internet live radio I tried did not work. But I have no problem on listening or playing stored MP3, RA or WMA files with installed Mplayer and Rythmbox.

Just curiosity, when I executed the Medibuntu update, it shows long list of updating and upgrading media modules. I wonder the Medibuntu update package does not load this necessary totem plugins

Really enjoy the Ubuntu support and learning from Ubuntu community. I cannot recall I can get any comparable support like this others. Great peoples, great support with care. Much appreciate.
