How to increase the performance of Gnome/Ubuntu.

Asked by Jinx

Hello, I am using Ubuntu Desktop 8.04 with Gnome of course and from time to time I have a really bad performance with it. For example if I am using Vmware Server and playing with it for a bit, the I am stopping it, the system needs like some time to actually free up the memory or something like that.

The problems is like this: Im using Vmware Server, and starting a guest, playing with the guest and shutdown the guest and of course stop using Vmware Server (doesnt matter the version, I have tryed everyone of them) and then I am locking my desktop coz I wanna go for a smoke :), after 5-10 mins I am coming back and I wanna unlock my desktop, but I have to wait for like 1-2 mins until the "Password dialog box" shows up, the only think I am seeing is that the system is really working hard, especially the disk, besides that nothing. (this is an example, its not just happening with Vmware Server this, just it was easier to explain)

Does anyone know how to bust up the speed of my Ubuntu and/or Gnome?!

I am running Ubuntu on Lenovo T61 with 2GB of memory and 120Gb of disk, 2Gb of swap. At this configuration I am expecting Ubuntu to fly honestly.

Please give me some pointers... how to increase the stability and speed of my system.

Thank you.

The issue you described sounds like a bug. Please open a terminal and then enter "gnome-system-monitor" and press [Enter]. After some seconds the system monitor window will appear and give you the possibility to find out, what's slowing down your PC that much. If some strange task is running and consuming a high percentage of your computing power, this might be a bug and you could file a bugreport.

Can you help with this problem?
