cannot connect to Internet using Webstar cable modem

You can download that package and other packages it depends on from other computer which has internet access, then install it (them) into you system with "dpkg".

what package are you talking about? And my system is not running any cdrom

I don't think you need to install the Cox internet software in Ubuntu in order to make your Internet cable connection work.

Thank you very much for your answers. I will try the recommended solutions when i get back home. I love the philosophy of open source software. My goal is to run my computer on only open source. I am new to the whole idea. I will be writing a research paper at the end of this experiment. The experiment is meant to explore the viability of using opensourcesoftware to accelerate the technological development of third world countries. The experiment will run till 2010

You said you need a "cox internet software", and in ubuntu, a software corresponding to one or more software pachages with one depends on others.

Indeed, I agree with Mark's opinion. Ubuntu has basic network support with it; typically, you don't need addtional installation for internet access.

I am still having problems with my internet connections.
First of all, i am no expert in computer jagon
I looked at the help section in ubuntu and followed the steps
I am not at home presently, so i cannot execute any recomended action
i have an ethernet connection to my webstar modem
my isp is cox communication
ubuntu recognised 2 ethernet devices, that was just about it.
Could you please provide a step by step approach to diagnosing the problem, that way i dont have to repeat previously performed steps

Can you provide us with the exact details (model and make) of the Webstar modem you are using? Is it connected to your pc using a USB cable or ethernet cable? Does the Webstar modem have both an ethernet/LAN socket and a USB socket?

Please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (type each then hit <enter>)

nm-tool
ping -c 4 google.com
ifconfig
lspci
lsusb
netstat -r
sudo lshw -C network
sudo dhclient eth0
sudo dhclient eth1
sudo dhclient

Step 3: Post results (cut/paste terminal output from each command) here
