Try Synaptic Package-Manager (System->Preferences->Synaptic Package Manager) and search for

basic programming

and then try to install e.g. basic256 and see if you can run your program files with it

Hi Tiefflieger, thank you for your help and suggestion, I have installed
basic256, it works fine, although I am unfamiliar with it, it has no
line numbers, I'll look see what I can do.

Hi,

In case basic256 cannot run your basic program files, then you can try this replacement for GWBasic called "seed7", which contains a BASIC interpreter called "bas7":

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=151126

FreeBASIC might also be a good choice:

http://www.freebasic.net/

Furthermore, here is a list of other free BASIC compilers:

Regards,

Mark

Thank you Mark, 256 appears to be imcompatable, I will be trying your
suggestions and let you know, would be great to get GW running, I have
important files on it that make extensive use of trig', and I really
want to give Ubuntu a fair crack of the whip.
Bill.

You might also look at BWBasic: http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/bwbasic

Also, how much code do you have on GWBasic? It might very well be worth your while to port your code to something a bit more modern/recent I think, even if just a newer/more modern/more standard version of BASIC.

I also meant to say: You can probably run GWBasic (or QBasic, which is compatible with GW if memory serves me right), under WINE on Linux. (But, a native solution is much preferable IMHO.)

Can you help with this problem?
