Yes there is! However, this mode is not on the standard 'Desktop' iso, it is distributed with the 'alternet' install CD. Just download the alternet iso for your archetecture, and when you boot up, one of the options will be a text install!
http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.04/

If you have any trouble with installation, there's a whole guide on the alternet CD: https://help.ubuntu.com/6.10/ubuntu/installation-guide/i386/index.html

I try to install Ubuntu 7.10 with MB Via VX800. At step 4 of 7, it could not detect the hard disk(actully, the hard disk is detected by the bios, install other version Linux, such as Fedora 8.0, is OK.). Then the process is blocked and could not finish the installlation. Per checking with Via company, that it mentioned to install Ubuntu 7.10 on the VX800 need at the text mode installation. Where could I get the the installation copy with the text mode? Or any ways to overcome this issue?

Can you help with this problem?
