incoming and outgoing e-mail settings

Asked by Ellen

I am completely new to Ubuntu and am having problems getting set up.
I need to correct my POP and SMTP settings. How do I find the the place where the mail set up is located? It appeared when I first started on Ubuntu but I did not put in all the information so my Ubuntu e-mail does not work. Where do I go to correct this?

I have gotten a copy of "Ubuntu Linux for Dummies" and "Ubuntu for Non-Geeks" and neither book tells me how to change or correct the POP3 and SMTP settings on my e-mail. When I filled out the initial form that came up, I forgot to put in SSL encryption, and I didn't put in the port numbers for POP3 and SMTP. How do I get that initial form back, or what other way can I use to correct my e-mail settings?

Additional information on e-mail setup:
My system log reads as follows:
message_handler: message handler not found under/com/redhat/dhcp/ethO for sub-path ethO.dbus.get.nis reason(same for servers, name, domain, interface).

What does redhat have to do with ubuntu, and is there any way to correct these errors?

Every time I try to open Evolution from the Office Menu I get the following message:
There was an error launching the application. Details: Failed to execute child process "/home/elen/Music/iTunes" (no such file or directory)

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this error?

About the menu item:
It sounds like the menu item has been changed to point to somewhere in your home directory rather than the evolution executable that you want to run. This should be fixable by:
Right click on the "Applications" menu
Select "Edit Menus" from the pop-up menu.
Click on the "Office" menu in the left pane of the new window
Right click on the menu item (Evolution) that's not working in the right pane.
Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
In the command box replace what is currently there with "evolution" (Clicking the "Revert" button might do this - I'm not sure how long it remembers previous values and I've still got defaults here).
Click "Close" in both of the windows.

Once you get into Evolution you can find the settings for the accounts from Edit->Prefferences. That'll get you a dialogue with mail account settings, click on the "Edit" button to the right to change the settings for the highlighted account. You can also delete and re-add the account to go through the wizard that you got for initially setting up the account.

Thank you. That cleared up the error message, but I still can't geor send e-mail to or from Evolution. I have checked and rechecked the settings and they are correct for pop and smtp but whenever I try to send/receive mail I get the following error message:
Unable to connect to POP server pop.att.yahoo.com. Error sending password: ERR[AUTH} invalid user/password. Please enter the POP password for ellemu on host pop.att.yahoo.com

I don't know what password they're looking for. I keep entering the password that was set up on att.yahoo.com when I was using Windows, but it won't work on Evolution. What am I missing?? What other password are they looking for?

The only thing I can suggest is that some mail servers want the
username as the full email address, not just the bit before the @.

If that doesn't help I think you'll have to speak to your email
provider. They should be able to look at the logs for the mail server
and identify exactly what is wrong or go over exactly what the
settings should be with you.

Sorry I can't be more help.

Thank you for responding. I've had this question posted for some time and you are the only one that responded to it.
I did go to AT&T Yahoo and had to be transferred to a special section that handles Ubuntu. Perhaps some one else can benefit from my experience. I did not buy the Dell computer that Ubuntu is set up on. It was given to me as a gift when my other computer died. After several months of trying to figure out why Evolution wouldn't work, I was told that I had to have the computer re-registered in my name with my password. In order to do that, I have to find out who originally bought this computer, and it was not the person who gave it to me.

When I get the right name and address, I can then have that person give permission for me to register this computer in my name. I have yet to find out who that person is, but from what I was told, once I have gotten permission from that person I can then re-register this computer in my name with my password and the e-mail and downloads should work.

I am totally new to Ubuntu and did not realize that only the person who buys the Dell set-up can register the computer.
Thank you again for your help. This has been a most frustrating experience.
