no sound

Asked by Nels

I have system sounds (beeps, etc...) and sounds at start-up, but I have no sounds when I stream video from the web, when i play games, and Amarok won't play anything, in fact its says:

Audio output unavailable; the device is busy.
xine parameters

I am a linux rookie but can follow directions if they are fairly detailed - not afraid to try!

Also recently upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid if that helps.

I typed in the highlighted command into terminal and got the following
response, (i have no idea what it means)

0 S nels 7054 7018 0 80 0 - 809 pipe_w 15:09 pts/0 00:00:00
grep -i dsp

BTW - still no sound and same error from Amarok
