How Can I Save Settings When I Uninstall Ubuntu?

Asked by taurus

I'm going to uninstall ubuntu and replace it with another o/s. In case I need to reinstall ubuntu with my settings, like, font size, color depth, etc., where would such a file exist to save it?

You should be able to keep most settings by just keeping /etc and the files and directories starting with a dot (".") in your home folder. There is no real guarantee that some program doesn't save its settings in some obscure other location though. Also, if you later reinstall a different (=newer) version of Ubuntu, then you shouldn't just overwrite /etc with your local copy.
