Video editing, remote server questions

Asked by Patrick M

Not so much a problem, as a teaching moment... I have switched from windows, and MAC as well to
Linux. So far so very good. Don't know squat about command lines, really, but able and willing to learn. Using Ubuntu 8.10. I want to download a video editing ( non-linear) app; also use another( older pentium III) pc as a file server for video files. I know this can be done, just not how. any tips on resources? Maybe someone already did something similar? not necessarily limiting myself to open-source, but have very limited funds. Still quite a bit of a newbie, less than three months into this whole new world, but already glad I ditched the Windows/MAC oligarchs! I am familiar with both windows and MAC non-linear editing programs if that helps wit this query.

Thanks. I downloaded LiVES. Good solid program. Any tips on setting up a second pc as a video file server with linux? Should I use Lan connection? serial connection? is there an app for this? I was able to plod through networking with windows. my limited experience with linux tells me that once I learn how to do things with ubuntu, or linux itself it is easier and better than windows. The pc I want to use to store the video files is an older, circa 2001 pentium III I plan to install hardy on it. Will it run intrepid?

Sorry I am not that helpful with regard to file servers.

I have install hardy on many P3´s the only thing which may be an issue is the memory. Please check out this community document regarding the system requirements.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

Sometimes with low-spec systems Xubuntu ends up being a much better alternative.
