Sound conflicts in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy

Asked by John Brooks

I don't know if this is aMSN or not, but when I was running aMSN, I could make voice clips and I could also hear them from the contact I was talking to. But then, when I opened VLC Media Player to play some music, I could no longer send or hear voice clips in aMSN. If I tried to play one, it would simply do nothing. If I tried to record one, it would give the error:

[*Timestamp here*] An error occured when trying to record the sound : Could not gain access to /dev/dsp for writing.

It can be solved by logging out of Ubuntu, and logging back in.

And I can hear the voice clips if I save them, and open them in another program.

Have you tried configuring your sound preferences. Open up menu System-> Preferences-> Sound.
You might want to change the Audio Conference settings. Try setting both Sound Playback and Sound Capture to ALSA.

Let me know if that helps
