What can I do if X.org7.4 / X server 1.5 does not recognise my devices?

Asked by Jem

According to https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/48695 , it may no longer be necessary to hack around in xorg.conf. Yay!

But what can I do if my monitor and/or graphics card is not detected correctly?

I have extremely low resolution in Intrepid using what was otherwise high res in Hardy. (My specific monitor/graphics are listed in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/48695 )

I am using the laptop with the lid closed and the monitor plugged in. When configured for mirrored display the screen resolution UI will not allow the display to exceed the maximum from the lesser display.

Therefore I could not increase the resolution on my monitor whilst the display was still mirrored.
