sharing virtualbox with other accounts on same machine?

Asked by jdfilburn

I just installed virtualbox and got it running successfully. Put XP in there, and things are ok.

The problem is when my wife logs into our hardy 8.04 with her account and opens virtualbox, it acts like a new instance. No XP, no configurations, etc.,

Please tell me where I went wrong. I'd like to either move (is that even possible?) or otherwise share the virtualbox I've already created (in my account) so she can launch it in hers.

I guess this would also apply to anything that is installed; what are the preferred file locations for say, family pictures, shared applications, and the like?

Thanks for your time.

There reason that virtualbox ¨acts like its a new instance¨ is because her default folders are different. Open up virtualbox preference from the file menu. In the general tab it will list the default folders for both VDI and machine.
Easiest fix for this is change her settings to match yours and change the the ownership of those folders by setting the group to vboxusers.

I recommend setting up a shared folder somewhere. On my machine I actually use a shared partition which formatted as ntfs (no file permission problems). You may want to create a shared folder on you machine to storage items like family photos, music, virtual machines, etc. For example you can create a folder /home/shared and give it 777 permission.

Can you help with this problem?
