Is the Next Version of OO3 Ready For Ubuntu To Download?

Asked by taurus

I got ubuntu 8.04 and want to know if the most recent version of OpenOffice is in the repos for download. I checked my Update Manager and couldn't find it. If it's not available yet in the repos, then when will it be ready?

.

Based on some launchpad discussions (notably https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/267376), it probably won't be. At least not in the regular repos - it may be in the backports https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports. It may not be in Intrepid either. It's easy enough to install though (I think I gave directions in a similar question of yours).

Thanks for letting me know, Jim. Actually, I installed MS Office in ubuntu, thank god! MS Office is the best thing to happen to ubuntu through wine, of course. Not only that, but MS Office is a whole lot better that OpenOffice. OpenOffice SUCKS!!!!!!

Well, glad to help, but I disagree with your assessment. Open Ofiice may not be as "great" as ms office but there is more to being great. Few people will find ms office worthwhile. For those that do then more power to them. For the rest of us, OO.o is a very solid alternative. I think you have to ask yourself why you use Ubuntu if you feel ms office meets your needs better. Why not just use windows? It would be easier if ms office is really what you need.
