Automatix/Ultamatix create set-up problem

Asked by yetimal

Ultamatix - which is purported to be the newer version of Automatix, used to work earlier but recently it has created a problem for me, a TOTAL NEWBIE!
After installing it it causes my Update Manager to freeze with the following message:

"Could not initialize the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Problem parsing dependency Depends, E:Error occurred while processing btnx (NewVersion1), E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/repoubuntusoftware.info_dists_harty_all_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' "

How do I correct this erroe? Any help anyone as I now cannot install ANY softwares!
THANK YOU.

open terminal and type : sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

You have to comment (adding a # before) the lines that ultamatix has added. they can be found easily because it says

## Ultamatix/Automatix Start ##

This lines have to be commented. just add a # before the lines in here.

## Ultamatix/Automatix End ##

Hope this Helps

Does this mean that Ultamatix is not a reliable package? Should I re-install it or how do I uninstall it?
Thank You.

yetimal you dont need ultamatix or automatix because you have everything that they offer in the ubuntu repositories. you can type in terminal : sudo apt-get remove ultamatix and sudo apt-get remove automatix to remove them. If you need aything from what they offer you can search it in the ubuntu repositories with the command : sudo aptitude search package_name or you can use System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager for a GUI package installer and search and install the packages with it. For example if you need the codecs you can install them with : sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras and sudo apt-get install w32codecs. Hope this helps

Thanks a million, you are a great help!
Will do as you suggest. However, I wonder if there is a deb package for Google Earth?

I am also trying to open up tarball files for Ubuntu. Can you help?

Thank you.

for installing google earth use : sudo apt-get install googleearth-4.3. Confirm the installation with y and you have to agree to the google eula when download has finished os just move with your keyboard to ok and press enter and you will find google earth after installing in Applications - Internet - Google Earth.

To open tarballs you dont have to do anything. Just double click the tarball and it will open with Archive Manager and then you can extract it wherever you want or you can right click the archive and in the menu that will pop up click Extract Here.

Dear Ermal,
Thank you for your patience.
I tried apt-get to install Google Earth in Ubuntu but it could not find the package.
I have however downloaded it as a .bin file. So I am not sure how to get it installed.
Will try the tarballs later when I can manage to download a file with that ext.
Thank you for your patience.

hello yetimal. sorry i forgot to tell you that you have to activate the ubuntu repositories. Go to System - Administration - Synaptic. In synaptic go to Settings - Repositories. In repositories you have to check all of them. Main , Universe , Restricted , Multiverse. After you have done that close that window, click Reload in synaptic and search for googleearth in synaptic.

Can you help with this problem?
